Mon.ki Is Building A Rapportive For The Web

logo-monkiPrepare for the concept of the address book to be flipped. Today, a startup called mon.ki is launching a new way for you to discover "who you know" by providing that information to you in the context of what you're viewing. The product, which they're calling a "social compass" of sorts, automatically extracts information from the web page you're viewing, and then displays relevant information from Twitter about the people and tweets related to the page . To be clear, it's not just about finding out who tweeted about that page, but about the people related to that page. For example, a TechCrunch article would point you to the author's profile, as well as Twitter profiles related to that writer. And Twitter integration is just the beginning. The company is adding support for Facebook, Google+ and LinkedIn, too. In addition to today's launch, mon.ki has also closed a round of $400,000 in seed funding.

It?s a commonly-held misconception that chiropractic care consists of is spinal adjustments and ?bone cracking.? Realistically, good spinal care is truly a mixture of careful adjustments, physical therapy exercises, along with other health and fitness practices to enhance proper spinal alignment and overall well-being. Overcoming misconceptions and myths about spinal care is difficult, since many people still regard adjustments as pseudoscience and new-age therapy. With chiropractic patient education videos, however, getting the right information to potential patients can be a lot easier. chiropractic marketing tools recognizes how challenging educating patients can be. To satisfy this challenge, they developed The best Idea, a bunch of educational videos created for patients.

All of which contain the same information, presented with awesome graphics, 3D models, and expert voice overs within a format that is engaging, interesting, and for one layman to grasp don't forget. These videos encompass everything from the origins of chiropractic, into the scientific principles behind a good practice, to everyone of the symptoms and typical health problems which can affect our lives that can be prevented or ameliorated with regular spinal adjustments. What?s more, they also provide factual information in regards to the misconceptions surrounding spinal care, helping to dispel some of the fears and skepticism that folks who will be unfamiliar with the demo can be the subject of. Pre-educated chiropractic patients who ve viewed these videos have several key advantages over others- these are more prone to continue going for regular spinal adjustments, perform their therapy exercises, and practice good spinal health measures, linking to more satisfactory patient outcomes. They also provide several advantages to spinal care specialists, simply because they are typically long-term patients, and are more prone to recommend chiropractic to others.

The Big Idea patient education videos aren?t a one-size-fits-all solution, either.chiropractic marketing tools is devoted to helping spinal care specialists educate their patients and succeed, and they also offer several ways to achieve this. European stocks lower on poor bank earnings

European stock markets were mostly lower on Thursday on downbeat earnings from major banks while the euro rose against the dollar after the US Federal Reserve's latest economic outlook, traders said.

In midday deals, Frankfurt's DAX 30 index shed 0.57 percent to 6,666.63 points and the Paris CAC 40 fell 0.75 percent to 3,209.96 points but in London the FTSE 100 edged up 0.07 percent to 5,722.88 points.

Milan slid 1.0 percent to 14,461.23 points after an Italian debt auction that raised 8.5 billion euros ($11.3 billion) in six-month bonds at higher rates than a similar sale last month.

In foreign exchange deals, the euro advanced to $1.3239 from $1.3215 in New York late Wednesday.

The banking sector took a hit following weak earnings from Britain's Barclays, Spain's Santander and Germany's Deutsche Bank.

Barclays shares lost 1.23 percent to 213.6 pence after it suffered a net loss of ?337 million ($546 million, 412 million euros) in the first quarter due to a huge accounting charge and compensation claims.

Santander tumbled 4.21 percent to 4.709 euros after the Spanish bank's first-quarter net profit slumped 23.9 percent to 1.6 billion euros.

Deutsche Bank meanwhile dived 5.27 percent to 32.335 euros after Germany's biggest lender said its net profit plunged by a third in the first three months as a result of weaker market conditions and exceptional charges.

"It's a busy day for earnings on the other side of the Atlantic as well, as Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Starbucks and Exxon provide their quarterly updates," said Chris Beauchamp, an analyst at traders IG Index.

"Also out today are weekly jobless claims, the Chicago Fed activity index, pending home sales and the Kansas Fed manufacturing index."

In London, pharmaceuticals giant AstraZeneca topped the fallers board, shedding 5.83 percent to 2,675.3 pence.

The Anglo-Dutch drugs said net profits dived 44 percent in the first quarter and announced the exit of chief executive David Brennan.

On the upside, energy giant Royal Dutch Shell was boosted after posting a 16-percent jump in adjusted first-quarter net profits on the back of higher oil prices, with its shares up 3.2 percent to 2,259 pence.

Asian markets edged up on Thursday after a cautiously upbeat assessment of the US economy by the Federal Reserve and comments from its chairman that he would provide more support if necessary.

Earlier gains were pared as dealers await a Bank of Japan policy meeting on Friday, while ongoing concerns about Europe proved to be a weight on sentiment.

Tokyo was closed flat, Hong Kong added 0.79 percent, Seoul gained 0.10 percent and Sydney rose 0.34 percent.

On Wednesday the Fed said it would keep interest rates at super-low levels until at least 2014 and forecast the world's biggest economy would grow more than first stated this year while unemployment would continue to fall.

However, it held off on any more stimulus measures for now, instead sticking to its current loose policy despite recent data showing the big pick-up in job creation had slowed.

After the two-day meeting chairman Ben Bernanke said further stimulus would be "reckless" but added that he was ready to use whatever tools he had at his disposal at any moment.

"We would not hesitate to use them should the economy require that additional support," he said.

The Fed news boosted Wall Street's main indexes on Wednesday. The Dow climbed 0.69 percent, the Nasdaq jumped 2.30 percent and the S&P 500 rose 1.36 percent.

Team turns scar tissue into heart muscle without using stem cells

Friday, April 27, 2012

Scientists at Duke University Medical Center have shown the ability to turn scar tissue that forms after a heart attack into heart muscle cells using a new process that eliminates the need for stem cell transplant.

The study, published online April 26 in the journal Circulation Research, used molecules called microRNAs to trigger the cardiac tissue conversion in a lab dish and, for the first time, in a living mouse, demonstrating the potential of a simpler process for tissue regeneration.

If additional studies confirm the approach in human cells, it could lead to a new way for treating many of the 23 million people worldwide who suffer heart failure, which is often caused by scar tissue that develops after a heart attack. The approach could also have benefit beyond heart disease.

"This is a significant finding with many therapeutic implications," said Victor J. Dzau, M.D., a senior author on the study who is James B. Duke professor of medicine and chancellor of health affairs at Duke University. "If you can do this in the heart, you can do it in the brain, the kidneys and other tissues. This is a whole new way of regenerating tissue."

To initiate the regeneration, Dzau's team at Duke used microRNAs, which are molecules that serve as master regulators controlling the activity of multiple genes. Tailored in a specific combination, the microRNAs were delivered into scar tissue cells called fibroblasts, which develop after a heart attack and impair the organ's ability to pump blood.

Once deployed, the microRNAs reprogrammed fibroblasts to become cells resembling the cardiomyocytes that make up heart muscle. The Duke team not only proved this concept in the laboratory, but also demonstrated that the cell conversion could occur inside the body of a mouse ? a major requirement for regenerative medicine to become a potential therapy.

"This is one of the exciting things about our study," said Maria Mirotsou, PhD, assistant professor of cardiology at Duke and a senior author of the study. "We were able to achieve this tissue conversion in the heart with these microRNAs, which may be more practical for direct delivery into cells and allow for possible development of therapies without using genetic methods or transplantation of stem cells."

The researchers said using microRNA for tissue regeneration has several potential advantages over genetic methods or transplantation of stem cells, which have been difficult to manage inside the body. Notably, the microRNA process eliminates technical problems such as genetic alterations, while also avoiding the ethical dilemmas posed by stem cells.

"It's an exciting stage for reprogramming science," said Tilanthi M. Jayawardena, PhD, first author of the study. "It's a very young field, and we're all learning what it means to switch a cell's fate. We believe we've uncovered a way for it to be done, and that it has a lot of potential." The approach will now be tested in larger animals. Dzau said therapies could be developed within a decade if additional studies advance in larger animals and humans.

"We have proven the concept," Dzau said. "This is the very early stage, and we have only shown that is it doable in an animal model. Although that's a very big step, we're not there yet for humans."

World's Longest Invoice: Freelancers Union Kicks Off Campaign To Highlight Unpaid Work

Worlds Longest Invoice

The Freelancers Union has kicked off the longest running invoice of unpaid work

div>

Freelancers have long been the envy of cubicle-trapped office workers. From the flexible hours to escaping mundane office politics, there's a lot to love about operating solo.

Yet, one major downfall that almost every freelancer experiences is unpaid invoices. The fact of the matter is that if a self-employed freelancer gets shortchanged, the cost of taking the issue to court is often greater than what the bill is worth.

But now freelancers are joining forces to fight back against "deadbeat clients" by creating the world's longest invoice, reports Business Week.

The civic action campaign launched Thursday is led by the Freelancers Union--a non-profit organization that provides health insurance to freelance workers--and invites freelancers to submit to their running tally of unpaid bills online.

At press time, the invoice had climbed to over $8.6 million in unpaid work, ranging from a slew of professions including web development, design, writing and illustration.

The New York Observer notes web-related services generated some of the highest rates named on the invoice.

So what's the point? Brokelyn--a web magazine about living in Brooklyn, N.Y.--reports that the Freelance Union plans to submit the total staggering amount to Albany legislators on May 22 to support the Payment Protection Act. The proposed legislation would allow freelancers to submit their complaints to the Department of Labor who would then chase up the client for non-payment.

?We hope the invoice will help them to see the scope and depth of the problem,? union spokesman Dan Lavoie told Brokelyn.

Want to hear more from the campaign? Check out the mascot they've adopted who sings the blues on YouTube about paying the rent.

IRL: gfxCardStatus, Nyko Charge Base 3 for PS3 and the OG iPad

Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we're using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

Different strokes for different folks. While Darren may have long since sworn off tablets as productivity machines, our very own Billy Steele (a designer by trade, don'tcha know) has been using one to workshop projects with clients. For Darren, anyway, productivity means having a laptop with a discrete GPU at the ready -- except for when the GPU drains his battery life, which is where an app called gfxCardStatus comes in. Rounding things out, we've got Jason Hidalgo talking up the different ways he's attempted to charge his needy PS3 controllers. All that and more after the break.

Merck posts big Q1 profit jump on lower charges

Drugmaker Merck & Co. said Friday that its first-quarter profit jumped 67 percent despite lower-than-expected sales, due to lower spending on production, marketing and research as well as an arbitration charge a year ago.

The maker of Singulair for asthma and allergies said net income was $1.74 billion, or 56 cents per share, up from $1.04 billion, or 34 cents per share, a year earlier.

Excluding one-time items, Merck would have earned $3.04 billion, or 99 cents per share, up from $2.86 billion, or 92 cents per share, in 2011's first quarter. Analysts polled by FactSet expected 98 cents.

Revenue was $11.73 billion, up 1.3 percent from $11.58 billion a year ago. Analysts expected $11.83 billion.

Merck reiterated its 2012 profit forecast, for $3.75 to $3.85 per share, excluding one-time items.

"Our performance this quarter was driven by the solid contributions across our pharmaceutical, animal health and consumer care divisions and by our ongoing efforts to operate more effectively and efficiently," Kenneth C. Frazier, Merck's CEO and chairman, said in a statement.

The company took charges totalling $1.31 billion, or 43 cents a share, for integration of acquired businesses, reduced value to some assets and accounting adjustments to inventory.

Prescription drug sales rose 3 percent to $10.08 billion, led by Singulair at $1.34 billion and jumps of about 25 percent for diabetes pills Januvia and Janumet. They brought in a total of $1.31 billion, helping make up for generic competition continuing to slash sales of former blockbusters Cozaar and Hyzaar, for high blood presure.

Merck recently got U.S. approval to sell an extended-release version of Janumet, which combines Januvia and a widely used generic pill, metformin. But Singulair, Merck's top seller, goes off patent in August, creating another drain on revenue.

Sales of veterinary medicines and vaccines jumped 8 percent to $821 million on higher sales of pet and cattle products. Sales of consumer health products, including the Coppertone sun care and Dr. Scholl's foot care lines, rose 7 percent, to $554 million.

In last year's quarter, Merck took a charge of $500 million to end arbitration with health care giant Johnson & Johnson over rights to immune disorder drugs Remicade and Simponi, blockbusters with several billion dollars in annual sales.

J&J had sold them jointly with Schering-Plough Corp., but after Merck bought Schering in November 2009, J&J sought worldwide rights to their sales. Under the arbitration settlement, Merck also gave up rights to sell the drugs in Latin America, Canada and some other regions, reducing its revenue from the two injectable drugs in the quarter by 26 percent, to $519 million.
