World stocks up on hopes of new Fed stimulus move

BANGKOK (AP) ? World stock markets were modestly higher Monday as sluggish U.S. growth boosted hopes for more measures from the Federal Reserve to help the world's No. 1 economy.

The Fed has already carried out two massive rounds of bond-buying known as quantitative easing to drive down long-term interest rates and stimulate spending and business investment. Low bond yields also encourage investors to shift money to stocks.

Stan Shamu of IG Markets in Melbourne said that investors shrugged off the weaker-than-expected U.S. economic growth figures released Friday, as well as a second downgrade this year by S&P of Spain's debt, amid hopes that the Fed will launch a new round of bond buying to keep interest rates low.

European stocks were mostly higher in early trading. Britain's FTSE rose 0.2 percent to 5,759.82 and Germany's DAX added 0.2 percent to 6,815.04. France's CAC-40 fell 0.6 percent to 3,246.79.

U.S. stocks were headed for a neutral opening, with Dow Jones industrial futures nearly unchanged at 13,168. S&P 500 futures were flat at 1,398.

Asian stocks were higher in trading thinned by holidays in Japan and mainland China. All major Asian markets except Tokyo will be closed for holidays on Tuesday.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 1.7 percent to 21,094.21, with banking shares racking up solid gains.

South Korea's Kospi added 0.3 percent to 1,981.99 amid improving business sentiment among manufacturers. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.8 percent to 4,396.60 as rising commodities prices helped push up its mining sector.

Benchmarks in New Zealand, Taiwan and the Philippines also gained, while Singapore and Indonesia fell. Markets in mainland China and Japan were closed for public holidays.

Riskier assets such as stocks could lose momentum Tuesday, when China is due to release its manufacturing index for April. Shamu of IG Markets said analysts expect a reading of 53.6 for April, up from 53.1 in March. Anything lower could disappoint.

Traders are also awaiting U.S. monthly jobs figures for April, to be released Friday, and the second round of France's presidential election on Sunday.

Polls suggest the election will be won by Socialist contender Francois Hollande, who wants to renegotiate a European treaty intended to limit excessive government spending to emphasize growth over austerity. Economists fear Hollande could upset France's delicate cooperation with Germany, which has been critical to Europe's efforts to resolve its financial crisis.

U.S. stock markets rose Friday despite a report that the U.S. economy grew at annual rate of 2.2 percent, below the 2.5 percent that economist had expected. It grew at a faster rate, 3 percent, in the final three months of 2011.

Benchmark oil for June delivery was down 20 cents to $104.73 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 38 cents to settle at $104.93 in New York on Friday.

In currency trading, the euro fell to $1.3239 from $1.3259 late Friday in New York. The dollar fell to 80.14 yen from 80.39 yen.

Afghans aim for the Kabul stars

A campaign is being launched to take astronomy to schools, orphanages and refugee camps throughout Afghanistan.

Amateur astronomers, government officials and science communicators are behind the project, which will dole out star-gazing kits first around Kabul.

The Reach for the Stars project will establish the country's first astronomy curriculum for young children.

Drawing on the rich heritage of astronomy under Islam, the campaign hopes to expand to other countries too.

"During the so called 'dark ages' in Europe, Islamic civilisation championed both astronomy and physics, shaping our modern science," said Christopher Phillips, who is leading the project.

"In more recent times this has been suppressed; it was taught that the skies were the realm of Allah, and astronomical study and investigation were un-Islamic and forbidden.

"Now we want to help Afghan children regain ownership of their astronomical heritage and take advantage of its educational opportunities."

Kit form

The joint initiative of the international organisation Astronomers Without Borders and the Afghanistan Astronomy Association, with support from Afghanistan's Ministry of Education, will send astronomy kits to schools, orphanages and refugee camps around Kabul.

The kits will include The Little Book of Stars, a specially written introductory text for young Afghan children.

It will cover astronomical topics from A-Z accompanied by cartoon illustrations, in English and Pashto, the language spoken by Afghanistan's largest ethnic group.

As many schools lack even the most basic classroom materials, the kits will also include pencils, pens and paper.

Solar viewing glasses, star charts and simple astronomy learning exercises will teach children the movements of the Sun and planets.

"The kits are designed to familiarise children with the Universe on a basic level," said Mr Phillips.

"They're a guide to our own stellar backyard."

The book and the kits will be designed to avoid cultural controversies - for example, avoiding picturing boys and girls playing together.

Once established around Kabul, the programme will expand to cover the rest of Afghanistan.

The eventual aim is to reach other parts of Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

Motion Graphics & Animation: Mike Gaines

I really could not think of anything class-specific to write about; so I am going to write about a visual effects artist that I personally know!

Mike Gaines is a "digital artist" -- his works has ranged from graphic design, camera work, visual effects, post production, producing, and teaching!

I attended the Summer Institute for TV, Radio, and Film Production (ITRP) at Boston Univ back in high school, Mikey was the post-production / effects teacher and we have become good friends

His personal production company is "a graphic design company focused on providing quality, budget conscious projects for film and television productions. Since its inception, Gaines Images has expanded to include visual effects, DVD menu design and web design"

although he has little footage / productions on his YouTube, I did find this one After Effects video he made -- unfortunately he doesn't show how he actually stabilized it, but it is just so cool that we have the capabilities/technology of AE to turn a shaky shot, into something so smooth and stabilized

like i've said, he also worked as a special / visual effects artist for various productions (some series of FX, TNT, also Never Back Down feature film and others) -- the most interesting stuff I have seen from him his the screen compositions. it seems kind of complicated, with having to keyframe motions and create the on-screen image ... after talking with him, he says it is relatively easy

http://www.gainesimages.com/vfx/index.html

at 1:25 -- examples of his picture fixes are shown and very briefly the process

at 2:45 of his reel -- he provides demos of the motion graphic / animation work he has done for the various projects

all of which are effects and tasks that I think we could easily do in class, from all the material we have learned

Late-night poll: Do you use the external speaker on your Android phone?

HTC Rezound

We talk a lot about listening to music and watching video on our Android phones around here. Android handles multimedia well, and streaming services like YouTube and Google Music work really nicely on Android. Something most of us talk less about, but equally important is making phone calls. These are designed to be phones first and foremost. Both have one thing in common -- the speakers. There's pretty much three ways to get the sound from your phone to your ears; a wired headphones/headset, a Bluetooth set-up, or one of the speakers.

Personally, I hate using the speaker on any phone or tablet. When I talk on the phone, I pick it up like a phone and hold it against my head. The only reason I have a Bluetooth headset is to test and review Android phones. I'm picky about the way calls sound, because with today's tech there's no reason for them to not sound good. When it comes to music, games or video, I prefer and use a wired headset -- small easy-to-carry ear buds if I'm out, or a big honking set of over-the-ear 'phones around the house. Nobody else wants to hear what I'm listening to -- if so they would ask.

But since everyone's different, I gotta ask. Answer in tonight's poll.

Spare Land? How to Squeeze More out of Your Assets With a Commercial Land Lease

Investors and property owners alike can take advantage of land leases. Larger retail outlets, for example, sometimes lease extra parking area to another business interest.

The concept began as the Lend-Lease program during the Second World War. While the program started as a means of providing aid in the form of supplies and goods, air bases were leased to facilitate the transport of those goods. This system bred the modern land lease we use today.

Following are a few types of commercial land lease options:

Aviation: While the concept evolved from military air bases, commercial airports lease land for complementary purposes. A popular format divides the airport into several different areas, which relate to the required use.

Cell Phone Towers: This involves the placement of equipment or signage on a property. The cell phone company will pay the landowner a fee for the privilege of placing a tower on the property and rights to access the tower for regular maintenance.

Signage: Similarly, corporations may lease a portion of agricultural land adjacent to a high-traffic interstate in order to place their billboard signage. Access rights will typically be addressed in the lease agreement.

Agricultural Use: Government-owned land can be leased for agricultural purposes such as growing crops or watering and grazing livestock.

Parking: Corporations sometimes lease adjacent land in order to accommodate expanding parking requirements.

Kenya official: Grenade kills 1 in church attack

(AP) ? One person died and 15 people were wounded when a grenade was thrown into a church in Kenya's capital during Sunday service, an official said.

Nairobi's deputy police chief, Moses Ombati, said the grenade exploded at God's House of Miracles International Church in Nairobi.

The incident is the latest in a string of grenade attacks since Kenya sent troops into Somalia in October last year. Al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab militants from neighboring Somalia have vowed to carry out a major attack on Kenya for sending troops in.

Sunday's attack follows a U.S. Embassy warning that a terror attack on prominent government buildings and hotels in Nairobi could be imminent.

The embassy said Monday that the timing of the attack is not known but they believe it to be at a final planning stage.

Police have said that the Somali militant group is suspected of killing at least 30 Kenyan civilians since Kenyan troops entered Somalia.

In February, police spokesman Eric Kiraithe said the killings ? which go back to October ? are believed to have been carried out by sympathizers of al-Shabab in Kenya.

He said most of the attacks were carried out in towns near the border between Somalia and Kenya.

Police say that dozens of Kenyan youth have been recruited by al-Shabab and are operating in the country. Al-Qaida announced in February that it was merging with al-Shabab.

jklf.org.uk ? Blog Archive ? Internet Marketers Need Podcasts Too

Most internet marketers think that podcasting is best left to people who only want to entertain. Those people just do not think a marketing podcast has any use in online business. People always put limits on their own abilities and potentials, and they cannot see how a podcast can work very well when it is used in the right way. People will always appreciate podcasts that actually help them by giving them solid and valuable information. Yet for some, doing that presents a challenge because they don?t get it right. On the other hand, some can do that with no problem at all. You can benefit from solid and reliable help when you are just beginning your podcasting journey. So let?s talk a bit about how to put together your very first podcast.

Only use a reasonably good quality microphone that you know will do a good job for you. This is not a case where all microphones are created equal. Do some research and select one that offers reasonable quality that you won?t have to jump through hoops to get a good sound out of. Be sure to use a mic that will not pick-up everything in the room. Best bet is to perform some research. There are so many different kinds of microphones available, so you shouldn?t have trouble finding one for you. Check out your favorite podcasters. A lot of podcasters really get into it, and they?re proud of their equipment and usually have a page on their sites about it.

Offer multiple choices. Most people don?t really know, so they?ll talk for five or ten minutes. This is certainly easy to do. But think about your listeners because they may feel it?s boring. Most audio recording software comes with audio special effects that you can use to break up the talking. That includes using music, too, but be sure you have the legal right to use it. Some musicians will release their work under a creative commons license that will allow you to use part or all of their work. Just think in terms of breaking it all up into good chunks so people will not be bored with it.

Asking for feedback about your podcasts will always help you no matter what. It?s always best to be impersonal about it, so just ask for good and negative feedback. Then, see how you can improve from the process. Ask for suggestions for future topics. Always avoid letting your ego get in the way of improving yourself. Asking for other people?s opinions is powerful because it makes them feel valued. If you implement their suggestions as best you can (the ones you find appropriate), they will know that you pay attention to them. This particular approach is so powerful, plus you?ll be making your marketing even better and forming stronger bonds with your audience.

There is no doubt about how well podcasting can work, but you need to do it right just like anything else. If you work hard at it you can be very popular. It?s all good because you?ll be building your business. If you are willing to put in the time and the work, there is no reason that you cannot develop a devoted following. It?ll all be good for your profits in the end.
