'Crocodile Dundee' star Paul Hogan ends tax battle

(AP) ? "Crocodile Dundee" star Paul Hogan has resolved his seven-year battle with Australian tax authorities over alleged unpaid taxes dating back to his first international hit movie in the 1980s.

Hogan and his friend and producer John Cornell said through their lawyer, Andrew Robinson, on Monday that the pair had reached a settlement with tax authorities to resolve more than 150 million Australian dollars ($156 million) in alleged unpaid taxes and penalties.

Tax officials barred the Australian actor from returning to his Los Angeles home for two weeks over the matter in 2010 when he returned to Sydney for his mother's funeral. Hogan's lawyers eventually secured a deal that allowed him to leave Australia.

The 72-year-old comedic actor became an international star with the 1986 movie "Crocodile Dundee."

The most famous Portuguese writers

Jos? Saramago?- The 1998 Nobel Prize for Literature is a major reference in Portugal. Saramago managed to bring Portuguese literature to the international limelight in an unprecedented way mostly due to the universality and originality of his writing, penned with his typical sardonic humour. Saramago is often referred to for his idiosyncratic style of writing, considered by many as arcane, but don?t let this stop you from enjoying his books: the unmatched rhythm Saramago delivered in his novels, close to the cadence of oral speech, makes it almost impossible to put down once you begin reading.

?

Ant?nio Lobo Antunes?- The inner theatre of shadows and recollections is a common leitmotif in every book written by Ant?nio Lobo Antunes, the most original writer in Portuguese literature alongside Saramago. Lobo Antunes, a former psychiatrist who served in the military during the Portuguese Colonial War, from 1971 to 1973, bases much of his literary experience on both his professional and personal life.

?

Fernando Pessoa?- Simply one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. The poet and essayist Fernando Pessoa, who in life decided to publish just a single book of poetry about Portugal, ?Mensagem?, was discovered by subsequent generations and termed the greatest Portuguese poet of all times alongside Cam?es, writer of Portugal?s epic poem ?The Lusiads?. The multiplicity of his universe, peopled by a complex set of personalities under his concept of heteronyms, or independent characters with a past, present, and future of their own, has an incomparable richness and depth.

?

E?a de Queir?s?- Portugal?s greatest novelist of the 19th century, Jos? Maria E?a de Queir?s wrote essential novels about Portugal and the intricacies of Portuguese life. A follower of realism against the idealisation of daily life of the romantics, E?a de Queir?s wrote gripping and exceptional novels that haven?t lost the slightest bit of their freshness and contemporaneity over the years.

?

Gon?alo M. Tavares?- Gon?alo M. Tavares is considered one of the greatest Portuguese writers of the new generation. Winner of several literary awards like the 2005 Jos? Saramago Prize and the 2007 Portugal Telecom Prize, Gon?alo M. Tavares?s works enjoy not only the acclaim of the critics, but also of the public in their appraisal. The prolific writer, about whom Saramago predicted he would win the Nobel prize, has worked his way through several genres and has excelled in every one of them. ?Jerusalem?, his most praised book, prompted Saramago to say: ?No one has the right to write like this at 35. I feel like punching him?.

Rihanna Searches For Love In 'Where Have You Been' Video

Singer goes tribal and gets her dance on in trippy new Talk That Talk video.
By Jocelyn Vena

Rihanna in her "Where Have You Been" music video
Photo: Island/Def Jam

Rihanna's wondering "Where Have You Been" in the just-released music video for the Talk That Talk single. Her search takes her to mucky rivers, flower-drenched hillsides, desert-scapes and smoke-filled dance parties, overflowing with dancers popping and locking in tribal couture alongside the sexy pop vixen.

The video, which she dropped on her Facebook page, opens with Rihanna emerging from a river, scantily clad and as lonely-looking as hinted at in the track's lyrics. "Where have you been all my life?" she sings while performing more intense choreography than fans of the singer might be used to. She shimmies and shakes in an exotic desert-like setting, wondering where her one true love might be hiding.

The video serves as a kind of photo shoot for a tribal-print-themed spread in a fashion magazine, with Ri donning funky looks that feature lots of animal prints, chunky jewelry and headdresses. It's sexy and full of longing, much like the song itself, and even includes the singer appearing topless in certain shots. And if a topless Rihanna can't find love, what hope is there for the rest of humanity?

As the Calvin Harris-produced track grinds on in all its EDM glory, Rihanna continues her trek throughout the world, looking for that special guy, who seems to slip through her fingers at every turn. Rihanna looks fiercely into the camera, shimmying to the song's bumping beat, with her siren call being blasted into the wilds of the world.

The video turns psychedelic as it nears its end and a kaleidoscope effect is filtered over the clip, with glitter-sprinkled Rihanna making one final plea. Several dance breaks, wardrobe changes and hairstyles later, Rihanna looks as if she still might have to live her life all by her lonesome. At the video's end, she goes back underwater, with just her dancers to keep her company.

In addition to dropping her video on Monday (April 30), the singer will also sit down with her "Battleship " castmates during "MTV First: Battleship," where she'll be on hand to debut an exclusive clip from the blockbuster and open up about her big-screen debut.

Don't forget to watch Rihanna on MTV tonight at 7:56 p.m. ET to see the premiere of an exclusive "Battleship" clip, followed by 30 minutes of Q&A with the film's stars on MTV.com, hosted by MTV News' Josh Horowitz. Fans can get in on the action by submitting video or text questions via MTV.com or via Twitter using @MTVNews, hashtag #MTVFirst or #AskBattleship.

Jobs, earnings will move market this week

By Angela Moon and Rodrigo Campos, Reuters

It will be another battleground for S&P 500 index next week. Will the bears finally give up and let the bulls have their way?

The S&P 500, the market's broadest measure, managed to close out the week above the psychologically important 1,400 mark for the first time since early April. But the index is still down 0.4 percent for the month so far even after gaining 1.8 percent for the week, with only one trading day left in April.

Brian Lazorishak, senior quantitative analyst and portfolio manager at Chase Investment Counsel in Charlottesville, Virginia, said a close above 1,400 is positive, but the recent high, near 1,422, is a more important technical level.

"That's what we're looking for on the upside as confirmation there's room to move higher," Lazorishak said.

"A close above that would open the window to testing highs back to early 2008. The next natural area you'd see is a run to at least 1,440, the May 2008 high.

Next week's release of a slew of economic data on the U.S. labor market and the beginning of the latter half of corporate earnings will be keenly watched to see if they are enough to allow stocks to break above the recent trading range.

The S&P 500, up 11.6 percent for the year, jumped 4.4 percent in January, 4.1 percent in February and 3.1 percent in March, but is down 0.4 percent so far this month.

"The sideways action we have seen over the past few weeks was enough to alleviate any overbought conditions that existed in the market a month ago," said Larry McMillan, president of options research firm McMillan Analysis Corp in a report on Friday.

"Thus, the market has the potential for another leg higher in this longer term uptrend, one that began early October 2011," he said.??

At the top of investors' radar screen next week will be the government's closely watched monthly jobs report for April, to be released on Friday. Jobs growth in March slowed to 120,000, the smallest increase since October, disappointing investors even though the unemployment rate fell to a three-year low of 8.2 percent.

Ahead of the government's payrolls report, investors will be watching the ADP Employment Report due on Wednesday and weekly jobless claims data due on Thursday for indications of whether the labor market is gaining momentum.

Corporate earnings, which drove gains in stocks last week, will also be in focus.

As of Friday, 57 percent of the S&P 500 companies had reported first-quarter results. Of those 287 in the S&P 500 that had reported earnings, 72.8 percent posted results that topped analysts' expectations, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Companies due to report earnings next week include Chesapeake Energy and Pfizer Inc on Tuesday; Prudential Financial, Time Warner and Visa Inc on Wednesday; and Kraft Foods and Viacom Inc on Thursday.

Also on agenda next week, Jamie Dimon, chief executive of JPMorgan Chase & Co, has organized a meeting of major bank chief executives with Federal Reserve Governor Daniel Tarullo, the central bank's point man on regulation, according to The Wall Street Journal on Friday.

The meeting, slated for Wednesday in New York, is expected to focus on a Fed proposal to limit banks' exposure to other firms and governments, though other regulatory concerns likely will be discussed.

CNBC's Tyler Mathisen looks ahead to what are likely to be next week's top business and financial stories. It's all about the economy, next week.

World stocks up on hopes of new Fed stimulus move

BANGKOK (AP) ? World stock markets were modestly higher Monday as sluggish U.S. growth boosted hopes for more measures from the Federal Reserve to help the world's No. 1 economy.

The Fed has already carried out two massive rounds of bond-buying known as quantitative easing to drive down long-term interest rates and stimulate spending and business investment. Low bond yields also encourage investors to shift money to stocks.

Stan Shamu of IG Markets in Melbourne said that investors shrugged off the weaker-than-expected U.S. economic growth figures released Friday, as well as a second downgrade this year by S&P of Spain's debt, amid hopes that the Fed will launch a new round of bond buying to keep interest rates low.

European stocks were mostly higher in early trading. Britain's FTSE rose 0.2 percent to 5,759.82 and Germany's DAX added 0.2 percent to 6,815.04. France's CAC-40 fell 0.6 percent to 3,246.79.

U.S. stocks were headed for a neutral opening, with Dow Jones industrial futures nearly unchanged at 13,168. S&P 500 futures were flat at 1,398.

Asian stocks were higher in trading thinned by holidays in Japan and mainland China. All major Asian markets except Tokyo will be closed for holidays on Tuesday.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 1.7 percent to 21,094.21, with banking shares racking up solid gains.

South Korea's Kospi added 0.3 percent to 1,981.99 amid improving business sentiment among manufacturers. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.8 percent to 4,396.60 as rising commodities prices helped push up its mining sector.

Benchmarks in New Zealand, Taiwan and the Philippines also gained, while Singapore and Indonesia fell. Markets in mainland China and Japan were closed for public holidays.

Riskier assets such as stocks could lose momentum Tuesday, when China is due to release its manufacturing index for April. Shamu of IG Markets said analysts expect a reading of 53.6 for April, up from 53.1 in March. Anything lower could disappoint.

Traders are also awaiting U.S. monthly jobs figures for April, to be released Friday, and the second round of France's presidential election on Sunday.

Polls suggest the election will be won by Socialist contender Francois Hollande, who wants to renegotiate a European treaty intended to limit excessive government spending to emphasize growth over austerity. Economists fear Hollande could upset France's delicate cooperation with Germany, which has been critical to Europe's efforts to resolve its financial crisis.
