In a new study, scientists at the University of Copenhagen show that a specific type of carbohydrate plays an important role in the intercellular signalling that controls the growth and development of the nervous system. In particular, defects in that carbohydrate may result in the uninhibited cell growth that characterizes the genetic disease neurofibromatosis and certain types of cancer. The results have just been published in the well-reputed journal PNAS.

Scientists from The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen have put a special type of fruit fly under the microscope. The new research results turn the spotlight on a certain group of carbohydrates the so-called glycolipids and their influence on the cells' complicated communication system. In the long term, this model study can shine new light on the disease neurofibromatosis for the benefit of patients the world over. Egghead to the right: changes in cellular growth. "The most important thing about our discovery right now is that we document a new function for carbohydrates in the communication between cells. We also show how disturbances in the signalling pathways cause changes in cellular growth. This is knowledge that cancer researchers can develop," says Ole Kjrulff, doctor and associate professor at the Department of Neuroscience and Pharmacology, who has conducted the study together with Dr. Katja Dahlgaard, and Hans Wandall, associate professor at the Copenhagen Center for Glycomics.

Sugar chains control cell growth

Glycolipids are compounds consisting of fats linked to long chains of sugar molecules. They are located in the cell membrane, where they serve various functions, such as protecting the cell or making it recognizable to the immune system.

"In the fruit fly model, if we prevent the sugar chains from lengthening, we can show that carbohydrate plays an important role in controlling the growth of normal cells. When the sugar chains are shortened, the tissue grows dramatically on account of increased cell division. In particular, it appears that the nervous system's support cells the glia cells are influenced," explains Hans Wandall, associate professor.

Neurofibromatosis can cause deformity

The new results also influence our understanding of neurofibromatosis. This is a heritable disorder that results in unsightly tumours so-called neurofibromas in the nerves and skin. The disease affects approximately 20 people out of 100,000 and varies from mild to severe cases with decided deformities. The condition also affects the bones and often causes learning problems:

"When you get closer to an understanding of the mechanisms that result in a certain disease, naturally it is easier to influence the disease process in the form of drug development in the longer term. Neurofibromatosis is not a terminal disease, but it very much affects the life quality of the people who have it because the symptoms are so noticeable," explains Ole Kjrulff. Hans Wandall adds that the disease is also associated with certain types of cancer, particularly in the brain.

Taylor conviction sends warning to tyrants

LEIDSCHENDAM, Netherlands (AP) ? Former Liberian President Charles Taylor on Thursday became the first head of state since World War II convicted by an international war crimes court, a legal landmark observers say sent a clear message to tyrants around the world that their days of impunity are numbered.

Taylor, 64, was found guilty on 11 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity for sending guns and bullets to Sierra Leone rebels in return for so-called blood diamonds mined by slave laborers and smuggled across the border.

The verdicts were hailed by prosecutors, victims and rights activists as a watershed moment in efforts to end impunity for leaders responsible for atrocities.

Judges at the Special Court for Sierra Leone said Taylor's aid played a crucial role in allowing the rebels to continue a bloody rampage during that West African nation's 11-year civil war that ended in 2002 with more than 50,000 dead. The rebels gained international notoriety for hacking off the limbs of their enemies and carving their groups' initials into opponents and even children they kidnapped and turned into killers.

The verdict "permanently locks in and solidifies the idea that heads of state are now accountable for what they do to their own people," said David Crane, the former prosecutor who indicted Taylor in 2003 and is now a professor of international law. "This is a bell that has been rung and clearly rings throughout the world. If you are a head of state and you are killing your own people you could be next."

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also hailed the judgment as "a significant milestone for international criminal justice" that "sends a strong signal to all leaders that they are and will be held accountable for their actions," said U.N. deputy spokesman Eduardo del Buey.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland agreed.

"The Taylor prosecution at the Special Court delivers a strong message to all perpetrators of atrocities, including those in the highest positions of power, that they will be held accountable," she said.

Taylor attempted to avoid trial by claiming head of state immunity in 2003, but the court rejected his claim and went ahead with his trial after his 2006 arrest.

Despite Thursday's optimism, international efforts to prosecute leaders have been spotty so far at best: Slobodan Milosevic died in his cell before he could be found guilty of fomenting the Balkan wars, Moammar Gadhafi was killed by rebels last year before he could be turned over for trial, and Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir is openly defying attempts to arrest him on international genocide charges.

In one success story, prosecutors at the U.N.'s Yugoslav war crimes tribunal are close to wrapping up their case against former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic ? although it took more than a decade to have him arrested.

Even Crane ? a vocal supporter of efforts to hold leaders accountable ? concedes that while war crimes tribunals are independent, they are hard to separate from geopolitical realities.

Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime is widely accused of atrocities as it battles to put down a popular revolt, and yet the prospect of him or any of his generals being indicted any time soon appears remote. Syria does not recognize the International Criminal Court, meaning prosecutors there cannot intervene unless the U.N. Security Council asks them to. Russia and China would likely veto any such move.

The ICC has indicted al-Bashir for genocide in Darfur, Sudan, but he openly defies an international arrest warrant by flying to friendly nations and has recently cranked up war rhetoric in his country's border dispute with South Sudan.

Most likely the next former leader to face justice will be former Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo, who is jailed in The Hague on charges of attacking political opponents as he attempted to cling to power following elections last year.

Prosecuting Taylor has proved how hard it is to bring leaders to justice. He fled into exile in Nigeria after being indicted in 2003 and was only arrested three years later. And while the Sierra Leone court is based in that country's capital, Freetown, Taylor's trial was staged in the Netherlands out of fears it could destabilize the region.

Even the prosecution was tough. There was no clear paper trail linking Taylor to rebels, and judges wound up convicting him of aiding and abetting the Revolutionary United Front and Armed Forces Revolutionary Council but cleared him of direct command responsibility over the rebels.

The global implications meant little to survivors of the war in Sierra Leone who celebrated Taylor's conviction.

"I am happy that the truth has come out ... that Charles Taylor is fully and solely responsible for the crimes committed against the people of Sierra Leone," said Jusu Jarka, who lost both his arms during the fighting in 1999 and now runs an organization for fellow amputees.

In Freetown, the capital, crowds that had gathered to watch the verdict live on television sighed with relief when the conviction was announced. Simmering anger, though, was aired through posters, including one that read: "Shame on you Charles Taylor. Give us your diamonds before going to prison."

After the judgment was read out, Taylor's attorney, Courtenay Griffiths, slammed the conviction as based on "tainted and corrupt evidence." He claimed prosecutors paid for some of the evidence.

Taylor, as usual impeccably dressed in suit and tie, said nothing in court and showed no emotion as he was convicted.

There was emotion enough at his trial as 91 prosecution witnesses outlined the horrors of Sierra Leone's war, many of them describing murders, mutilations, tortures and acts of cannibalism by rebels and the children they turned into merciless killers.

Taylor spent seven months of the trial defending his actions, portraying himself as a liberator of the Liberian people, a regional statesman and peacemaker.

Edward Songo Conteh, of Sierra Leone's Amputee and War Wounded Association, was in court to watch the verdicts. His only regret was that Taylor was not immediately sentenced. That will happen next month after a separate hearing.

The court has no death penalty and no maximum sentence. Judges have given the eight other rebels they convicted sentences as high as 52 years.

"I want to see this man behind bars for the rest of his life," said Conteh, who had one of his hands hacked off by child soldiers.

New standards for treating traumatic shoulder injuries to improve patient care

The new standards, developed by a radiology resident at Brigham and Women's Hospital, will help ER radiologists diagnose secondary injuries in patients presenting with traumatic shoulder injuries

Traumatic shoulder injuries that result in a patient visit to the ER often contain a secondary injury that can cause pain and discomfort in that part of the body after the primary injury has healed. By focusing on the primary injury, radiologists sometimes miss the secondary injury, which can compromise treatment effectiveness. Trainees in the Brigham and Women's Hospital Radiology Residency Program developed new protocols aimed at drawing ER radiologists' attention to the potential presence of secondary should injuries. Better identification of these injuries could lead to improved patient outcomes. These protocols, which have been awarded the 2012 Gold Medal by the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) , will be presented on April 28, 2012 at the 2012 ARRS Annual Meeting in Vancouver, Canada.

"The severity of shoulder injuries are often underestimated," said Dr. Scott Sheehan, radiology resident at Brigham and Women's Hospital and lead author for the study. "Subtle injuries can have significant consequences if not recognized and treated promptly."

Dr. Sheehan and his team used images from multiple imaging modalities to illustrate the force mechanisms that cause the five most common types of traumatic shoulder injuries (dislocation, proximal humerus fracture, shoulder separation, clavicle fracture, and scapula fracture). For each type of injury, the team developed guidelines for the optimal use of imaging in diagnosing the injury. For example, they recommended that the goal of imaging acute shoulder dislocations is to "address immediate complications and identify risk factors which could lead to the development of chronic shoulder instability." (Sheehan, et al.) During their presentation at the 2012 ARRS Annual Meeting in Vancouver, BC Sheehan and his team will present simple and practical protocols for understanding the mechanisms of primary shoulder injuries and the most commonly used injury classification systems.

"When radiologists understand the common mechanisms of primary shoulder injuries, they can more appropriately direct their attention to the most clinically significant associated secondary bony or soft tissue injuries," said Dr. Sheehan. "Early detection of these injuries can ideally lead to improved timeliness of appropriate treatment and ultimately improved functional outcomes."

Sheehan and his co-authors began studying the effects of traumatic shoulder injuries after one of his radiology mentors suffered a shoulder dislocation with a subtle yet significant associated injury.

Larger businesses recognising multiple benefits of video conferencing

Communications giant Cisco has unveiled a new telepresence system that?s designed to transform the business landscape through workplace collaboration.

PC Advisor reports that the new TX9000 and TX92000?telepresence suites, which feature three-mighty 1080p 60fps screens, are designed for ?high-intensity? collaboration purposes, such as brainstorming and planning sessions, or even critical problem resolution scenarios.

With scope to accommodate up to six users, or 18 in the more advanced TX9200 suite,?the telepresence technology provides native interoperability support for SIP, BFCP, H.264 and Telepresence Interoperability Protocol (TIP).

Furthermore, unlike some telepresence suites, the TX9000 doesn?t require additional lighting or audio support.

Although what?s most exciting about the TX9000 and TX9200?s release, is that the suites can be set up within just two days, says Jeff Seifert, CTO of Cisco Canada.

?We have reduced the complexity of the hardware and chassis which makes it much simpler to install, and reduces costs,? Seifert said on eChannelLine.com.

?It also requires 20 per cent?less bandwidth than its predecessors while providing the same quality, so there are further savings there,? he added.

Communications industry analyst Maribel Lopez from Lopez Research says the release shows Cisco?is serious about its commitment to bringing truly collaborative features to the marketplace.

?The goal for Cisco is to change what collaboration means. For example, no vendor is the established choice for doing secure cross-company collaboration with video and document sharing and repositories,? she said.
